Crown the Empire’s The Resistance: Rise of the Runaways is the new “American Idiot”. There’s not one bad thing about this album. The echoing of various sounds, including some of the vocals, and the perfect placement of sound effects throughout, really creates a great theatrical mood that makes you believe you’re listening to a movie soundtrack. It’s complex, but not distracting, which we see a lot when drummers try to step up their game on an album. Brent Taddie provides a solid backbone with his phenomenal drum work. The guitar work of Benn Suede and Brandon Hoover drive this album full speed ahead, with extra support from Hayden Tree’s pulverizing bass. The vocals from Andy Leo and Dave Escamilla are on point throughout the entire record, and their individual tones compliment each other and work so well together. It contains one of the softest songs the band has ever released (“Millennia”), and also two of the heaviest songs (“Bloodline” and “Mnstr”). The Resistance: Rise of the Runaways is really diverse in its different types of songs. It doesn’t move too fast but it doesn’t move slow enough to lose your interest either. The story flows so well, you almost feel like you’re living the story as you listen to the album straight through from beginning to end. Everything is so masterfully done, from the way it’s written, all the way to the production. This may be the best concept album I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to. The Resistance: Rise of the Runaways starts with a long intro that introduces the story behind the album.
